Det korte svaret
The problem with gift cards isn’t the gift – it’s that it’s two millimetres thick. The solution is to give it volume and a bit of resistance. The recipient should spend a few seconds getting to the card.
Three tricks cover most situations: put the card in something bigger, use ribbon, and include a handwritten greeting. The first two take five minutes. The third is what’s remembered.

1. Box with tissue paper
Place the gift card between two layers of tissue paper in a small box. Tie a wide satin ribbon around it. Simple, and looks more expensive than it is. Measure the ribbon to about three times the circumference of the box before cutting.
2. Multiple layers inside each other
Wrap the card, put the package in a bigger package, and repeat two to three times. A classic that makes the whole room laugh, and makes a small gift take up space under the tree.
3. Rolled like a scroll
Roll the gift card together with the greeting in a sheet of kraft paper, tie string around both ends and tuck a sprig of juniper or a dried flower under the string. Takes two minutes and looks thoughtful.
4. A bow that actually stays
Place the ribbon under the package, cross it on the top side, turn the package over and cross again on the underside, then bring the ends up and tie on top. This keeps the ribbon tight on all four sides instead of slipping off.

- The balloon. Roll the gift card tightly, put it inside a balloon before blowing it up. The recipient has to pop it to get to it.
- The treasure hunt. Three to five notes around the house leading to the next. Works disproportionately well on adults.
- Filled with something else. Put the card in a box filled with popcorn, coffee beans or pasta. The weight fools everyone.
- Wrong box. Put the gift card in a box from a completely different product. A toaster box under the Christmas tree creates reactions.

Same problem, same solution: give it volume and a bit of resistance.
- The money cake. Roll the notes into cylinders, fasten with paper clips and place them tightly packed in a round box. Looks like a cake when the lid is removed.
- The string. Attach the notes to a long string with small clothespins and roll it up in a box with holes in the lid. The recipient pulls it out bit by bit.
2 måter når gavekortet er digitalt
A digital gift card can’t be wrapped in paper, but it can still be given a wrapping. What creates the feeling of a gift isn’t the paper – it’s the seconds between “here’s something for you” and “oh, look at that”.
- Print and wrap. Print the card or code, put it in a box with ribbon, and give it physically. Works when the gift is to be presented at a gathering.
- Digital gift package.Send the gift card as a package the recipient must open on screen, with a greeting, picture and sound inside.
Det viktigste er ikke papiret
No matter how nicely you wrap it: what the recipient remembers in a year is what was written in the card, not which ribbon you used. Spend five minutes on the wrapping and ten on the greeting, not the other way around.
