What to write in a confirmation card?

Most people spend more time on the card than on the gift. Here are 18 greetings for the confirmand you can use as they are – and a simple recipe for making them your own.

Det korte svaret

A good greeting to the confirmand consists of three parts: a congratulation, one sentence about this person, and a wish for the road ahead. The middle sentence is the whole point – it’s what separates a personal confirmation card from one that could just as well have been written to anyone.

You don’t need to write much. Three sentences that ring true beat ten sentences taken from a template.

Slik gjør du hilsenen personlig

The templates above get you started, but it’s the details that make the card treasured. Four things that work:

  • Mention one specific memory. “I’ll never forget when you insisted on carrying my bag all the way up” beats “you’ve always been helpful”.
  • Say something about who they are, not just what they do. Character lasts longer than achievements.
  • Write about the future without giving advice. Confirmands receive a lot of advice on this day. A wish resonates better than a reprimand.
  • Write to them about ten years from now. Confirmation cards often stay in drawers for a long time. Write something nice to find again.

This is what you should avoid

  • Kommentarer om utseende eller kropp – heller ikke som kompliment.
  • “Now the seriousness begins” and other variants that childhood is over.
  • Jokes about money in the gift, especially if you’re giving money.
  • Writing the same to all the confirmands in the family. They compare.

Hva gir man i konfirmasjonsgave?

Money and gift cards dominate, and there’s a reason for that: fourteen-year-olds have specific wishes and changing interests. The confirmation gift that hits the mark is usually the one that lets the confirmand decide for themselves.

The downside is that an envelope with money feels impersonal. The solution isn’t to give something else, but to put more effort into the greeting – or to send a Send a gift card where the card and the amount are connected instead of lying loose in the same envelope.

If you’re wondering how much to give, the usual amounts – depending on how close you are to the confirmand – are listed in how much to give for a confirmation gift. And if you want a poem in the card instead of prose, there are 14 originals in poems for the confirmand.

Frequently asked questions about confirmation cards

What do you write in a confirmation card?

Write a congratulation, one sentence about the confirmand specifically, and a wish for the road ahead. Three sentences are enough. What makes the greeting personal is the middle one – something only you could have written, like a memory you share or a quality you appreciate.

How much money do you give as a confirmation gift?

In Norway, typical amounts range between NOK 500 and 2,000, depending on how close you are to the confirmand. Close family usually give more, family friends less. There’s no set rule, and a thoughtful card often means more than the cash.

Is it okay to give a gift card as a confirmation present?

Yes. Confirmands are at an age where they have very clear opinions about what they want, and a gift card lets them choose for themselves. Include a proper greeting, so it doesn’t feel impersonal – it’s the greeting that makes the gift personal, not the wrapping.

What do you write on the envelope to the confirmand?

First name is enough if you hand the card over in person. If you send it by post, write the full name and address as usual. Many also write “To the confirmand” or “Congratulations on your day” in the corner.
