Det korte svaret
Write to the child. That’s the simplest advice, and what makes the biggest difference. A baptism greeting starting with “Dear little Ada” will stay in the album – one starting with “Congratulations on your day, you all” rarely will.
The formula: a welcome, a wish for the life ahead, and a sentence about who you are to the family.

Use these in addition to the greeting to the child, or alone if you’re closer to the parents than the rest of the family.

3 hilsener fra fadder
The godparent’s greeting is the one the child will read most carefully. A concrete promise beats a beautiful phrase.
- 1
As a godparent, I promise to be here – on birthdays, on bad days, and all the days in between. Congratulations on your baptism day.
- 2
I’m proud to be your godparent. You’ll always have an adult to call. Welcome to the world.
- 3
To my godchild: May you become exactly who you want to be. I’m cheering for you no matter what.
3 korte og høytidelige
For short cards, or when you want a more serious tone.
- 1
God bless you and keep you all your days.
- 2
May you always know that you are loved, just as you are.
- 3
With the warmest wishes for your baptism day and the life ahead of you.
Fire ting som gjør dåpskortet bedre
- Write the date. In twenty years, “your baptism day” will be less valuable than “14 June 2026”.
- Sign with who you are. “From Kari” says little to a child. “From Kari, who was in class with your mum” says everything.
- Avoid advice on upbringing. The parents get enough of that from others on this day.
- Write by hand if you can. Handwriting is part of what makes the card worth keeping.

A short poem suits a baptism card, and makes it easier to write something that lasts for many years. The poems below are written by us and free to use — the well-known baptism poems people search for are usually still copyright protected.
- 1
Welcome, little you. You know nothing yet, and we know nothing about you. It’ll be lovely to find out together.
- 2
May you have safe hands around you, a door that’s always open, and the courage to step through it.
- 3
One day you’ll read this yourself. Then I hope you know how many stood around you the day you got your name.
- 4
You came, and a whole room of people softened around the edges. Welcome to the world.
Hva gir man i dåpsgave?
Silver spoon, name necklace and book are the traditional choices, and they still hold up. But many new parents have the ceremony items they need, and instead lack completely ordinary things.
Money for a savings account is practical, but hard to wrap nicely. A digital gift card with a proper greeting offers the same flexibility, but feels like a gift rather than a transfer.
