Group gift: how several people chip in for one present

One person takes responsibility, suggests an amount per head, sets a deadline, and decides how the greeting should be collected. Most can manage the first three points. The fourth is usually where it goes wrong.

And choose a gift the recipient can pick themselves. When fifteen people chip in, no one knows what the person actually wants.

1. One person owns the task

Shared responsibility is no responsibility. One person decides, the rest contribute. It’s not undemocratic, it’s the only way it gets done.

2. Suggest an amount, don’t demand it

“£10–£20 per family” gives people a guideline and lets those with less money give less without having to explain. Never a list where everyone sees what others gave.

3. Collect before you buy

The person who fronts the money often ends up covering the difference themselves. Set the payment deadline at least three days before the gift is to be given.

4. Decide the greeting early

This is the point people forget. If everyone is to write in the same card, the card must physically go around – and someone is always sick, on holiday or working from home that week. Clarify this before you buy the card.

There are two ways, and the choice depends on how many of you there are.

• Under ten people: Physical card that goes around. Draw fields with a pencil first, so everyone gets the same amount of space, and set a deadline at least two days before the presentation.
• Over ten people: Collect greetings digitally. Everyone writes their own when it suits them, and no one has to be in the same place at the same time.

Group gift for the teacher is the most common of all. Keep the greeting short and concrete – and sign with the class, not all the names.

Group gifts for nursery staff are most often given at summer parties or when a child leaves.

When many chip in, the amount quickly becomes more than a single item costs – and the taste of the whole group is impossible to capture in one product. That’s why group gifts so often end up as gift cards.

It’s not a bad choice. It only becomes bad if the card is empty. A Send a gift card with fifteen greetings inside is something completely different from an envelope with an amount.
